I Can See You're Out of Aces

In my 5:30 class we are reading a story about how the Chinese believe that you can tell someone’s personality and future by the shape of their face. We were having a discussion about how reliable and valid this is. One of the girls, Gina, pipes up and says, "Well, teacher… there are some parts of it that are reliable. Like, I wear glasses. And people can see my glasses and know that I’m really smart because I read a lot of books."

Before I could even say anything, Chris turns to Gina and quips, "Maybe you just watch a lot of TV."

Sweet! Funny on so many levels. And here I  thought I wasn’t teaching them anything…

  1. Did you really buy your glasses on the street in Itaewon?  Or are you wearing them to look smarter?  Or are they real and you\’re wearing them because you use the laptop too much?!

  2. Yes, I really bought my glasses on the street in Itaewon. I am wear them when I am feeling alter-egoish. They are not real. They are the equivalent of earrings. Except they make me feel smarter. My alter-ego is smarter. And more evil.
