New Photos

I just sort of realized that I had a bunch of pictures sitting around that I hadn’t uploaded. Well… now I’ve uploaded. They are up at Flickr, if you want to take a look.

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah… BATGIRL!

Recently Ameliar has reminded me that friends often enter our lives for "a reason, a season, or a lifetime". And I think that this is true. Of course, there are many times that we are unaware of which heading people fall under at the time we are with them. It is only in hindsight that we realize the purpose people have in our lives.
And then there are people so utterly kick-ass that you know beyond a doubt that they are lifers.  Thus enter: Batgirl.

Carey and I have been friends since grade 11. That’s 1993 (go ahead and insert age joke here). We were close right from the start, and although we are occasionally incommunicado with each other, I have always felt as though we have stayed close.

I got some mail today. I’ve been waiting for mail. I ordered some self-love off the internet (t-shirts you dirty-minded monkeys!) but I was really suprised to get mail from Carey (she is bad about mailing stuff – true story). Suprised and happy.

The return address is from Careybatgirl and it was shipped to Jodi-Wan Kenobi. Here’s the important thing about the envelope… after my name there is a small box with a checkmark in it. I saw that and could have cried. Remember earlier in my blog the "Remember Me: Check" entry?  Well, Carey did.  And it made me happy. So happy.  But what I found INSIDE the envelope…

Carey:  YOU ARE AMAZING.

When we were in grade 11, I wrote and illustrated a children’s book for Carey on lined loose-leaf paper. (Side note: everyone here was oooing and awwing over the paper – we don’t have loose-leaf here).  The story was about her and I.  Now, my recollection of the time is hazy (stupid mind-altering substances!) but I believe I wrote it because Carey was feeling sad and I wanted her to be happy.  So it blows my mind that she has not only kept the book, but then thought to send it to me at a time when I needed to feel happier. And I hope she doesn’t mind, but I would like to share our story here. Although really, it ain’t the same without the fabulous illustrations….

A Tale of Two Friends

One day there was a frog named Kermit. She was very unhappy.  She had lost all her happy thoughts and forgotten how to fly.
On the same day, but in a different spot, there was an unflying piece of broccly. Broccly was even wilting a bit.
The sun wouldn’t shine, and mean clouds ate the happy clouds.  It rained and rained.
Then, one day, Broccly went for a ride.  She was still sad.
At Broccly’s new school, she met Kermit.  They were starting a friendship.
There were other friends, but Broccly and Kermit clicked the best.  Everyone else was just too wierd.
They did everything together. Even avoided death.  The expirience bonded them.
Not long after, they both found their happy thoughts. They found their wings and learned to fly.  And the mean clouds died.
Kermit and Broccly were friends for life.  And they lived happily ever after.

Carey! I can’t believe you have kept this damned thing for THIRTEEN YEARS!  I nearly cried when I saw it (but didn’t ’cause I was in public and all like, tough, and stuff.  And stuff.)  and then I laughed.

Thank you so much, Carey.  This reminds me that even if a bunch of friends have turned out to be more "seasonal" than I originally gave them credit for… there are people out there that won’t forget me and I will never forget them.  I love you so much.  Thank you!

7 New Wonders

Carey sent me a link to vote for the new 7 Wonders of the World. I cast my votes. How wonderful would it be to see all of them?

Just for the record, the Wonders of the Ancient World are:

The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Lighthouse of Alexandria

There are, according to good ole Wiki many other "Wonders"  But the list above is the orginal. The only monument still standing out of the seven is the Great Pyramid. I would like to see it one day.

Without Judgment

Now, most of you who know me know that “atheist” isn’t really the right word to cover what I believe. “Agnostic” doesn’t work either. I know what I believe. It just may not be exactly what you believe (if you believe anything… and if not, rock on). Anyhoo, I received this message on Myspace:

I’m curious as to who really believes in God on myspace?? There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in God, then repost this and title the bulletin as "best friend". if you don’t believe in God, then just ignore this. In the Bible Jesus says…"If you deny me before man, I will deny you before my Father in Heaven." Honestly how long is this gonna take…30 seconds

This seemed like an odd request to me. I suppose because if I sent out a message that started with "I’m curious as to who doesn’t actually believe in the Christian idea of "God" on myspace" I would get flamed out of existence. Which does sort of bother me. And although I do like that it says "There is no bribe"… I don’t appreciate the barely concealed threat of "If you deny me before man, I will deny you before my Father in Heaven." So – if I DON’T acknowledge God by sending along this message then I don’t get to go to Heaven?  Since when has God been checking out Myspace for believers anyway? And the question is "who really believes in God"… it doesn’t ask "who really believes in Jesus". But the scripture quoted is what Jesus says. What if I believe in Jesus and not God?  Is that okay then?

According to good ole Merriam-Webster, "Deny implies a firm refusal to accept as true, to grant or concede, or to acknowledge the existence or claims of." If I don’t respond to this request, is that "a firm refusal to accept as true"? Seems like a harsh punishment for not answering a chain letter.

If you are curious, "if you deny me before man" is from Matthew 10:33 and as per the King James the full wording is "But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven." And it is Jesus giving the twelve disciples a prep talk before sending them out "as sheep in the midst of wolves" (Matthew 10:16) to spread his word. And I’m telling ya, Matthew 10 makes Jesus sound like a coach giving his team the hard talk before the game. So maybe he was talking a little trash to get the disciples worked up before he sent them forth into the realms of the unbelievers.

A lot of people assume that I don’t have any faith. I do. But just not in what other people believe in. Scratch that… I just don’t believe in the same way. And why? Because of shite like this. I refuse to believe that God and/or Jesus would be so fucking petty. Seriously – don’t they have better things to do? Because if they don’t, I have a list I would like them to get started on… and not just for me. For all of us.

Strange Times

I’ve been having a strange week. Something has happened that keeps invading my thoughts, drawing my attention back towards it no matter what situation I am in. I guess I don’t have much choice other than to just tell the story, but it really won’t do justice to how I’m feeling.

I’m not doing Tae Kwon Do right now. My Master is in jail.

Apparently, here is the story:  My Master was driving home his students after class, and he struck and killed a child with his van.

He has to spend 40 days in jail.

His baby was born two weeks ago.

He will miss his baby’s first Christmas.

This breaks my heart. He is one of the nicest men I have ever met. He has a good heart. And this tragedy enters his life. And I know how much it is going to hurt him, because he is a good person. And he has to spend 40 days in jail. For the next 40 days, and for the rest of his life, he is going to have to replay that moment over and over in his mind.

I’m not saying that I don’t feel for the family who has lost their child; I do. But I know my Master and I feel absolutely sick about what he and his family must be going through.
And it reminds me that no matter how you live your life… no matter how good you try to be… no matter how well you treat others… in a heartbeat your entire life can be altered by an accident over which you have no control. Life is brutal that way. You can’t possibly see or know what the future holds for you.

And really, if this is what your future held… would you want to know?
